The load pattern

The base load never really drops. Refrigeration runs through the night, through the weekend and through the holidays, so the flat overnight floor is often most of the annual consumption. Summer makes it worse rather than better, because the plant works harder as the ambient temperature rises.

Why that matters

A constant load changes which measures pay. Solar only covers the daylight part of a load that runs all day and all night, so it needs reading alongside the overnight demand rather than against the annual total. Lighting in a chilled space adds heat the plant then has to remove, so the saving counts twice. Voltage optimisation suits a building where motors run continuously.

Measures that matter most

The ones this building type tends to suit. Each is still read against your building before anything is proposed, and a measure that does not suit yours will say so.

What usually gets missed

Door seals, night blinds and defrost settings, which cost little and are rarely reviewed. Capacity charges sized for a plant that has been replaced with something more efficient. And heat recovery from the refrigeration plant, which is often the cheapest hot water on the site.

One thing to do

Add the site and half hourly data if you have it. The overnight floor tells you more about this building than the annual figure does.
